It would be difficult to imagine a weapon more lethal and uncomplicated to manufacture than the Plague. Allow me to explain. Plague bacilli occur naturally in nature and crop up in places as close as Colorado and Oregon. Since Plague bacilli are carried by the same fleas that infest rats, cats, squirrels, prairie dogs and other rodents, they go anywhere animals go. Just three Plague bacilli can kill a mouse. A flea can disgorge more than twenty-thousand bacilli in a single bite.

In World War II, Plague was used as a weapon by the Japanese in China, killing hundreds of thousands of Chinese and allied prisoners, including Americans. In the Crimea, during the 14th century, it was used by the Mongol warlord Janibeg against the medieval city of Kaffa. Residents of that city fled, carrying it across Europe and the Middle East. Estimates of the resulting death toll run as high as one third of the known population at the time.

Imagine a terrorist with Plague bacilli discovered in nature or stolen from a lab. By injecting rats with bacilli and allowing fleas to feed upon them, millions of infected fleas can be bred, as the Japanese demonstrated in China using 1930’s technology.

Take a few empty soda cans, siphon the fleas from the rats with an ordinary turkey baster and disgorge them into the empty soda cans. Place a strip of tape over the hole and head for the subway. Just before boarding the subway car, remove the tape and drop the soda can on the platform. The fleas jump onto unsuspecting passengers as well as any rats that happen by, carrying the Plague all over the city.

In The Doomsday Diary, I present this scenario not to frighten but to warn. We are vulnerable, as the Ebola virus has made clear. Plague is much easier to spread than Ebola and is every bit as deadly. Pneumonic Plague is airborne like a cold or the flu and is nearly always fatal.

Lest you think I’m giving terrorists ideas, this information is, unfortunately, already widely available. We must take steps to protect ourselves before the terrorists realize that fleas are far simpler than nuclear weapons or airplanes.

(Unless vaccine is administered very soon it may not be effective. Symptoms can take days to present and may resemble the flu or a common cold, masking the Plague and negating the efficacy of the vaccine.)
